When the show came out, I really liked it, a lot. Seasons 1 and 2 were really good. Season 3 was okay but seemed to tread water. Season 4 was split in two with a year in between the halves. That hiatus was long and becuase I don't have the syfy channel, I was not inundated with constant reruns. I had almost forgotten about the show. Second half of season 4 was okay. It was obvious that they were doing some serious retconning because they finally figured out who they wanted to be cylons. Didn't really care for that.
The finale was a disappointment. Problem 1: Galactica is breaking apart on her own and they jump her directly into a fire fight where she takes a barrage of enemy fire and not only holds up but is able to ram a basestar and still jump out again later. Problem 2: they killed Boomer. Sure she was flawed, but she was trying to do the right thing in the end and, besides, she was hot. Problem 3: Lets not even try and explain Starbuck. Sure you could say that she is the Harbinger of Death because she ended both cylon and human civilizations by joining them, but that is a cop out. Harbinger of Death means one thing to most people; that she will be the instrument of mass destruction and destroy all cylons or at least the bad ones. Problem 4: Earth 2 was a copout. They showed us a destroyed earth as a shocking plot twist, now we find new Earth. What was a matter with Kobol? Why did we need them to be our ancestors, I was fine with being a cylon. Problem 5: The opera scene was stupid and didn't mean anything. This could have all been explained by saying that each character had a connection to her and maybe a seperate plan for her, but they go and make it a premonition. Why is she even important other than giving a reason to have the final battle? Problem 6: According to national geographic, hera doesn't even live that long. Again, why was she so important; just to be rescued? Problem 7: So every cylon ever was just hanging around the black hole waiting to get attacked. There are no more on Caprica or the other colonies? Problem 8: The attempt to explain everything as God's will. I mean that in itself is not so bad, but they don't even try to explain why it is God's will or how their contradictory actions have brought on this will. Free Will is not present in the BSG universe. It just looked like lazy writing and Deus Ex Machina to me. Which is kind of ironic as the show is basically about machines with souls.
I really don't think any ending to the show could have been satisfactory. There wasn't an end and as they stretched out the story, they added more and more that they pushed off as being explained later. I am a fan of a show ending on its own terms and this series has had some excellent individual episodes. The finale, however, was not one of them. The show ended not with a bang but with a wimper.
Recently watching the entire run of Buffy may have set my expectations too high for series finale. Buffy had some rough seasons too, but was able to pull it back together and man that final episode was awesome.
I was thinking that Fox's move of putting T:SCC and Dollhouse on Friday nights was to kill each show dead. Then I realized that X-Files came on Fridays for a long time and the show did very well there. Then I thought about the sci fi channel and their Sci Fi Friday promotion of the recent past. The current lineup is BSG that is ending, two incarnations of Stargate (don't watch, don't care) that I think are ending, Doctor Who which won't be back for another year, and some show called sanctuary that I have never heard of (maybe I should hulu, but given scifi's recent past with original programming maybe not). Fox is making a play here. They are filling a void that the absense of these shows has created. If it works it is brilliant. But, it won't work, both shows will be cancelled.
I was told that I was not a fan of BSG because I wasn't super psyched that it was coming back on. In my defense it has been off the air for like a year now. When the season ended early it was supposed to be the final season. Now we have a year long split in the final season. The show had actually been schizo before that, with some excellent episodes and some really boring filler episodes.
I also get chided for complaining about Heroes. A show that started out so fun and that has just kind of went in the wrong direction ever since.
This person is also not a fan of Lost (because they killed Mr. Echo), and she criticizes me for watching it. I will tell you something; everytime I have watched Lost, I have come to work the next day excited, confused, blown away, and have been able to talk about it to people. Nobody watches Heroes anymore and most people never knew that BSG existed.
Am I a fan? I say yes, that I like the premises of these shows and I am interested in the development of the characters. If you want to call me out because I don't like the direction the shows are taking or fail to fall all over myself about a show that is past its prime, that is fine with me.
Maybe I am just a fan of good TV. Something BSG provides half the time and something that Heroes could accomplish but doesn't.
Veronica Mars- Cancelled
Jericho- Cancelled
Drive- Cancelled
On the fringe-
Scrubs, The Office, Supernatural, BSG.
why the heck is it coming back-
Friday Night Lights
There are some interestingsounding new shows coming out-
Reaper (CW), Bionic Woman (NBC), Journey Man (this one is ripping off my heroes spin off and quantum leap(NBC) ), cavemen (ABC) I don't think it will be funny or last but who knows, Carpool (ABC)
Fox has yet to announce
I hate network execs, and I hate dumb Americans that watch the dumb shows and get the good ones cancelled. "wah, I have to think about this show but I don't know how to think, what channel is American Idol on."
The IFL on UPN (or whatever it is they call that network), isn't bad. It isn't the UFC, but it will do. There seems to be a lack of a serious ground game for most fighters. If someone goes down, they usually bend over fetally and proceed to get pummeled.
Thank God Your Here- was funny for its first episode but the second one fell flat. The show itself cast normal actors into improv situations. The hilarity of the episodes will depend on the ability of the person on stage to improv. Malcolm's Dad (Hal) from Malcolm in the middle was the funniest I have seen so far. Newman from Seinfeld was a close second.
The Office-Darn you NBC, darn you to heck! I would like to thank NBC for the numerous commercials letting me know that the office would be starting early and ending late. I missed the first five minutes and the last ten. I will have to view it on their website which, I imagine, was there intention. I didn't even realize that I had missed any of the end until someone at work was talking about it and I was like, "when did that happen."
Scrubs-Goodbye Laverne, you will be missed. Hello J.D. junior. One episode was shown out of order or shot out of order because we finally find out what happened to Perry's hair.
The Ultimate Fighter-A guy cries because he can't lose weight. You will have to scroll down to my sissification post to see my feelings on this. This season looks to be promising with a bunch of guys with shortman's syndrome.
Heroes-Two more weeks. Two more long and miserable weeks. New York is so getting blown up.
Battlestar Gallactica- As if the second half of this season (minus a few great episodes) wasn't going to drive fans off, the show isn't coming back for its final season until 2008. The people over at scifi are about retarded.
Jerricho- tonight we get some answers. This show has been quite the suprise.
What is wrong with the producers. If you have a mystery building up over the whole season about the final 5 cylon models, why would you give it away during the preview for the final episode. Sure they didn't show his face but anyone that follows the show will know that Anders was the person who said, "We are cylons." Sure, we still have to figure out who the other members of we are.
The episode just felt forced. Everybit of it. Which is ironic, since it took about a zillion filler episodes to get there.
Here is my question: shouldn't Athena know anything that Caprica 6 knows? When she downloaded, didn't she get the Borg Collective update version 6.0 talking about all the cunning new ways to catch the fleet?
I am guessing that because of the music the final four will be Gaeta, Tigh, Torry, and, of course, Anders.
Heroes - Heroes so rocked last night. The writers stepped up big time and answered the question about Mr Bennett's alliances and who the Hatian is. I was very satisfied with the episode and look forward to seeing what happens to Claire and Matt. In the previews it showed simmone as alive. What the heck is that about?
BSG - Another filler episode. It is kind of hard to make a fuel shortage due to a strike seem urgent because of the cylons when it seems that all cylons have been written off the show. Now it is lost in space with a fleet. I will be suprised if they tie any part of this episode into any other episode; which is a shame. With some forethought they could have been foreshadowing it in earlier episodes and could continue it on, but they didn't and they won't. Look at the refugee storyline, gone. I was thinking they should send them to work the mining ship. Two stones, one bird.
Amazing Race - All Stars? are you kidding me?
Veronica Mars - Didn't see that one coming. Keith being sheriff again could become a little too deus ex machina.
Heroes: What is in the pink bag? Claire's adopted mom is in some serious trouble. Who is the guy with the guns (both muscular and mechanical)? I think Matt is going to get busted with the diamonds or he is going to try and sell them to this guy named Linderman. I thought Sylar had the info from the map, isn't that the same info from the list?
BSG: I so thought Dualla was going to buy it. It was really just a filler episode (new orleans allegory). I like that they brought back imaginary Baltar. Athena is just slipping back in like she didn't try to switch sides.
Scrubs: Why did she lie to him? My theory is that she wants someone that can teach the little guy to throw. I like that Dr. Kelso.
Lost: oh yeah, lost was on. I need answers. I have been patient for almost 3 years, what is the monster? Tell us who the others are.
The office: Roy, stay away from Jim's woman. They may have crossed the line with Michael's cluelessness. It was just a little too unbelievable.
I searched for a Battlestar Galactica group and saw that there wasn't one, so I created the group myself. If you are interested, just slip on over and join.
It is the best show on TV.
